Troubleshooting

Common issues and how to fix them. Most problems are one prompt or one rollback away from solved.

When something goes wrong, try these first

  1. 1. Refresh the page
  2. 2. Roll back to the previous edit
  3. 3. Ask Star to fix it, pointing at the specific issue

Common issues

My game won't load or shows a blank screen

  • Refresh the page. Most load issues resolve with a simple reload.
  • Check the console panel in the editor for errors. It often points to the exact problem.
  • Try rolling back to the previous edit. If your latest prompt broke something, roll back and try a different approach.
  • Ask Star to fix it. "The game is blank. Check the console and fix the error."

The game played fine, then an edit broke it

  • Roll back to the last working version. Every edit is saved, so nothing is lost.
  • Try the same edit with a more specific prompt. "Add enemies" is less reliable than "Add red enemy squares that move left to right and kill the player on contact."
  • Break your edit into smaller pieces. If you asked for three things at once, ask for them one at a time instead.

Star isn't building what I asked for

  • Be more specific about mechanics, visuals, and goals. "A platformer with tight controls" is clearer than "a cool platformer."
  • Use reference images to show what you want. Drop in a screenshot or piece of art.
  • Start simpler. If you asked for a complex multi-feature game, pare it back to just the core mechanic first.
  • Try the Pro model if you're a subscriber. It handles complex requests better than Fast.

The art looks generic or uses emojis

  • Generate custom assets. Emojis are Star's default when you don't specify art.
  • Open the asset panel ("Create game art") and generate a sprite for your character, background, or props.
  • Reference an image so Star matches a specific style.
  • Define a style preset like "16-bit pixel art, warm palette" and apply it to all your assets.

An edit is taking forever

  • Complex changes take longer. Adding a whole new feature or reworking core mechanics can take several minutes.
  • If it's been stuck for a long time, cancel and try a smaller prompt. Break big changes into steps.
  • Check the console for errors. Sometimes a generation hits a loop and needs to be canceled.

My microphone doesn't work in the game

  • Check your browser permissions. You should have seen a permission prompt. If you denied it, re-enable it in your browser's site settings.
  • On iOS Safari, permissions can be finicky. Try refreshing after granting access.
  • Microphone input is currently the only supported browser capability. Camera and other APIs aren't available yet.

The game works on my computer but not on phone

  • Check that your game handles touch input, not just keyboard or mouse. Ask Star to "add touch controls for mobile."
  • If you built with keyboard controls, add on-screen buttons for mobile players.
  • Test the published game on your phone. The editor view may behave differently than the shared game.
