Five strategies to safely intervene when you witness harm

Direct

Speak up directly

Address the harmful behavior head-on. Speak directly to the person causing harm or check in with the person being targeted.

Interrupt indirectly

Create a distraction to disrupt the situation without directly confronting the person causing harm. Be creative!

Get others involved

Ask someone else to help — a manager, security guard, conductor, or another bystander. You don't have to act alone.

Document

Record the incident

Record what's happening if it's safe to do so. Always prioritize checking in with the person targeted — ask if they want the footage.

Check in afterward

If you couldn't act in the moment, check in with the person who was targeted after the fact. Ask how they're doing, offer resources, and let them know you saw what happened and it wasn't okay.
